Of everybody out there that has pcos, how many are you overweight? If you are overweight and lost the weight, did you get pregnant? I am really curious to know about the relationship between being overweight and having pcos. I have heard so much about if you lose the weight you will get pregnant. How much weight is enough???

There is a definite link between PCOS and being overweight. There is also a link between PCOS and being glucose intolerant. It works like this: The body stores estrogen in fat. The body produces too much insulin (glucose) and when it isn't used, it turns into fat. The more fat you have, the more estrogen and insulin get stored instead of getting used. Because it isn't getting used, the ovaries don't think you have enough and they keep producing. Eventually you end up with PCOS because of the imbalance! (See the vicious cycle?)

Docs will generally put those with PCOS on Metformin. Met makes the body use the insulin it has stored, instead of making more. Once it starts using the insulin, it starts losing the fat...and thus losing that extra estrogen. Without the fat to store the excess estrogen, the hormones get back in balance and the PCOS is considered under control.

I have not yet managed to get pregnant, although my cousin (whose PCOS is more severe than mine) has a daughter. The docs have told me that if I lose as little as 10% of my body weight it will make a huge difference in my ability to conceive.

I was diaognosed with PCOS 9 1/2 yrs. ago when I thought I was pregnant. Yes being overweight is usually part of it, but different for everyone. They say if you lose 10 lbs or more things get better, You become overweight due to the Insulin resistence that most with pcos have. hope this helps!

PCOS and weight usually go hand in hand. I have found that the more overweight you are the more symptoms you experience, although its the majority, there are exceptions. I am learning how to eat following the Glycemic Index, I switch out sprouted garin bread, or whole wheat bread for the White(evil enriched/bleached) bread. I try to use brown rice noodles or again whole wheat/whole grain noodles, and TRY(but don't always succed) in avoiding sugary foods. There is a book actually that I havent read-YET but it comes highly recommended "New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS" You can find it on amazon.com for less then 10 bucks. Also to answer the question about preganacy, a lot of woman, if they can lose just 10% oftheir weight, example 20lbs, for a 200lb woman, you will notice your symptoms getting better, and your chances of getting pregnat increase. hope this helps, I too have PCOS, and I have 2 children, and never got down to the perfect weight before having them!

I was diagnosed with pcos @ 22 ( in 2002) I was a very athletic person & when I started gaining weight while still exercising & eating healthy I had no idea what was wrong with me. I didnt gain a lot of weight but I am still uncomfortable. I'm small....5 feet tall, I used to weight about 100-110 lbs & now Im close to 140 lbs. Its hard to lose any weight & I am still pretty active. I've tryed it all & it gets frustrating bc I just want to go back to being athletic & thin again.

I've been ttc for over a year now with no luck. My Dr. put me on Clomid. 50mg the 1st round & now 100mg the 2nd round. Hope something happens. It sucks when i take these hpt & nothing happens.
