All of the above answers are good particularly the advice about doing a scan disk that is error checking first before you do the defrag. Do not have any other programs open while you are defragging -- it slows things up and I might add. Turn off your screen saver for the duration. I was told by a computer pro that this slows things up also. On average I would say the defrag takes about 50 minutes but it could take as long as 2 to 3 hours especially if you don't do what these good people are telling you to do.

The first important factor is how big is the hard drive.
The second important factor is did you do an error check before you defragment the computer. Please note that in Windows 95-ME the computer checks the disk error before it starts to defragement. It may take a while if the bar keep reseting. Try to close out any real time applications like a virus scanner or messanger when you defragment.
*Recomend you turn off the net if your paranoid* It may take a while for the PC to defragment. and the PC can not defragment in safe mode.
usual defragment time about >40 min depending on how much you have on the hard drive.

scan disk, disk clean up and then defrag.. if you have errors, it won't defrag.. so do the scan disk 1st. if you haven't defragged in a while , it takes longer.. set defrag going when you go 2 bed.. do a defrag once a week or so, will make defrag faster.. you will need more then 13 % space on comp 2 defrag..

That depends on how long it been sence last one, and how active the computor has been--could take anywhere from half hour to two, the best way is do defrag in soft mode, might be quicker.

nicely relies upon on the particular computing gadget and how plenty RAM and not easy disk area it has, and what precisely the video card is and all that yet confident, it's going to be slower. How plenty slower relies upon on the factor I in basic terms stated. it could grow to be so sluggish that it takes extraordinarily much an hour as nicely up, or it could in basic terms decelerate a extra functional quantity. i does not improve to Vista till you have a clean piece of hardware you elect to place in that demands VIsta. video interest benchmarking on XP and Vista, wager what, XP kills Vista in overall performance and fps rankings from countless video games. So my advice is get XP engaged on that previous win ninety 8 field, and carry on with XP for now, no reason to have Vista good now, provide it some extra years.

all depends on the size of the hard drive and how regular you are at the maintance on the system. Also depends on the amount of used space on the drive. If regular maintance on a smaller hard drive (under 10 GIG) a couple hours, if not maintained and full of files 24 hours+
