The hymen (or maidenhead; or in slang cherry) is a fold of mucous membrane which surrounds or partially covers the external vaginal opening. It forms part of the vulva, or external genitalia, and is present in all females at birth. The most common formation of the hymen is crescentic or crescent-shaped, although several other formations are possible. A woman's hymen is destroyed when she gives birth; she may be left with remnants called carunculae mytriformes or the hymen may be completely absent.

The hymen has no known anatomical function. In societies which value chastity, the greatest significance of the hymen is a traditional belief that an intact hymen indicates a state of intact virginity. However, it is not possible to confirm that a woman or post-pubescent girl is a virgin by examining the hymen. A physician routinely checks the appearance of the hymen of baby girls at birth, and again during all future pelvic examinations. In cases of suspected rape or sexual abuse a detailed examination of the hymen may be carried out, however the condition of the hymen alone is often inconclusive or open to misinterpretation, especially if the patient has reached puberty.

The name hymen is from the Greek for membrane. Hymen is also a name for the Greek God of marriage and weddings, Hymenaeus, but this name has a different root.

It is a membrane at the opening of your vagina.

Often it is torn the first time you have vaginal sex - often, it will bleed when it's broken.

In some cultures, there is a little celebration when the membrane is broken (they even bring out the bloody sheet to "prove" you were a virgin and your husband broke the hymen the first time he had sex with you)

Thats why, when a virgin girl has sex the first time, people say that she has "broken her cherry" or "had her cherry popped"

The hymen can also be broken by a tampon, or by vigorous physical activity

I'm not sure why it's there, or what biological purpose it serves.

Many people are under the impression that the hymen is located within the vagina. It is not. It’s a mucous membrane that is part of the vulva, the external genital organs. It’s located outside the vagina. The hymen is a layer of tissue, just like the tissue around the opening of your vagina that partially conceals the vaginal orifice. You may or may not have one, most females do. The hymen is not an indicator of virginity; a girl is a virgin until she has been penetrated by a penis.

a little flap ring of skin just inside the opening of the vagina. then during first intercourse it tears or rips. I have no earthly idea of what its natural purpose or use is other than Gods way of proving to a husband if his wife is or isnt a virgin upon marriage.. But having said this.. girls can tear that little piece of skin so easily, with bad bicycle rides, and other physical activities when a child..
