It is NOT REQUIRED!! I am pregnant with my third child and never had one done. It is up to you. I don't know about the pain, but there is a slight chance of miscarriage after ward, because it does poke a hole in your water sac, usually it closes on it's own, but sometimes it doesn't and causes a miscarriage. Also it is not 100% accurate. If you are not comfortable with it then don't do it. If it matters to you that much that your baby MAY have downs then do it, but like I said, it isn't 100%.
If you have no reason to get it done, such as factors, downs is in your family, you're over 40, and so on, then why worry. If it comes back positive, you get to worry for the rest of your pregnancy, and it may not even be the right diagnoses.
It is your body, and your baby, IT IS YOUR CHOICE!!

amniocentesis is a test done to scan the baby for the downs syndrome. It's usually optional but if u have a family history of down's syndrome or u r 35 years or more in age at the time of pregnancy then u can be asked to have it. It is a little painful as a needle is inserted into ur belly to take some sample from the placenta. It's not always 100% correct and carries 1% chance of miscarriage as well. but if u have no family history of down's syndrome and are below 35 years then all u'll be asked to have a blood test between 16-18 weeks of ur pregnancy.

All medical tests are optional because you can always refuse. Usually the Amniocentesis is not even recommended unless some genetic reason warrants it. They usually try other exams first like an ultrasound or a tripe screen. These check for abnormalities and things like down syndrome. The only tests I had done during my pregnancy was urine tests and some bloodwork and one ultrasound.
Good Luck and Congratulations

Take the try what can it damage. I had this try finished without probability factors (23 years previous) and it got here again positive for defects. i replaced into hysterical all day considering that a nurse observed as me on the phone to inform me. on the top of the day they observed as again and suggested that they had incorrectly marked that I had a baby with down syndrome which threw off the readings. I very almost blew my lid at this!!! yet I did locate out that the try is faulty lots and a try that shows defects ought to really be no longer something in any respect. They then do an amniocentesis to be particular. i replaced into the advised that this technique has a a million in seventy 5 threat of causing a miscarriage. both way, i ought to have the try and then if a situation is got here upon you are able to choose on what to do next. If there is something incorrect you have to be prepared from start for the certain desires. good success!!

I had one done when i was 33 weeks to see if my baby's lungs were developed cause i had went into labor. I was more scared of the whole thing that i thought it would hurt so bad but it didn't. They will insert the needle (just don't watch, i couldn't) as they do an ultrasound on you at the same time so they won't hit the baby. You have to sign papers beforehand and that alone reading all what could happen made me not want to but i did. They will monitor for about an hour afterwards hooked up to a fetal monitor. I just watched the ultrasound as they done it and held the nurses hand. (I am a big baby lol)
Just don't worry so much if you get one done but that is the only reason why i had one done was to see if his lungs were mature cause they were going to go ahead and do a c-section on me if they were cause my pre-eclampsia was getting worse. I had him though at 35 weeks.

It is optional and done at around 20 weeks but may be highly recommended for various health reasons including possible Down's Syndrom symptoms showing up in a sonogram or other reasons including paternity DNA collection.
It isn't quite "painful" so to speak, believe me you will noticed alot more pain when you go into labor but it can cuase cramping as well as having a 1% chance of complications such as miscarriage.

It is never required (no one can force you to have any medical procedure done.) Any responsible doctor would not suggest one unless the pregnancy was "high-risk" (mother over a certain age, increased likelyhood of genetic disorders etc.), because there is a slight risk of miscarriage.
I really don't know about the pain. I would assume that they would use some sort of anesthetic if it was painful. You should really just ask your doctor about this.

no medical procedure can be forced upon you, pregnancy related or not. your doctor or midwife can recommend them or even refuse you treatment if you refuse certain tests, but its YOUR choice. Best to educate yourself about the benefits and risks of any procedure so you're making an informed choice.
