Its a V-6 engine based on the older 2.8 liter V-6 GM engine
It's 3100cc's in size. Its a cast Iron block,Aluminum cylinder heads with 2 valves per cylinder. has overhead valves with a roller cam and lifters in the block valley. It has Multitec style fuel injectors that tend to go bad, unless you replace them with Bosch style deposit resistant injectors. Its basically a good little engine, low power output in stock form but GM performance has raced this engine with pretty good results.

I have a 1992 Lumina 2 door with a 3.1L V6 in it. Like the answer above it is a very reliable engine but the fuel injectors don't go bad on these engines. The 3.4L duel quad cam engines have this problem but this does not happen until 160 to 170,000 miles and that's also if you don't clean them. And also the 3.1L engine does not have roller rocker arms the 3100 engine has them.(3.1L and 3100 are two totally different engines) My Lumina has 124,500 miles on it and it runs great it gets 24 miles per gallon and it has good passing power. If you would like to know the specs on the engine here they are. It has 140 HP @ 3800 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) and 184 Foot pounds of torque @ 3600 RPM, Max revs is 5500 RPM I don't know if you know what this means but I figured I would not hurt.

i own a repair shop,,and more than likely from the factory it has 5-w-30 in it,but if it has any miles at all on it you can use a good 10-w-30 in it,that's a little better oil to work with ,,but you can stay with the thinner oil if you want to ,its all good ,as long as its not the cheap brand,,any good major brand oil will be good in it,,good luck, hope this help,s.
