We have a gerbil that loves his big "fish tank", and he has been around for over 3yrs. Hamsters are also a good choice, or a guinea pig that size tank is more than adequate for one.

Turtles are actually great pets, and as long as you wash your hands thoroughly its very difficult to contract the virus. We had one for several years, although they do take alot of care and need special lights food and vitamins to be kept healthy.

I have firebelly newts (2) and eels (2) in my 29 gallon tank. They get along fine and have been together for a little more than four years. They are pretty easy to take care of--keeping the tank clean is the biggest issue. They do NOT get along with crabs, however.

get a rat just be sure that you keep the tank clean with a lid on it so you won't lose him.

You could have fire belly toads, or anoles, or other small lizards.
