My son is 5 weeks old and has been breastfeeding, but today i gave him some enfamil so my mom could feed him while i cooked...well now he is throwing up really bad and keeps crying every 5 mins, then lays there then cries again, i called walgreens and asked for gripe water, went in and they didn't have it. What can i do?

I would just let him be, anything else may just cause further distress. I love gripe water but sometimes it is best to just let things be, if you could try another store gripe water may be worth a try.

Please do not give your son any more formula. Get a breastpump if you want to give him bottles.

If you are really desperate the main ingredients in gripe water are baking powder and fennel. BOIL some water and add a few fennel seeds and a pinch of baking soda (just a little bit). If you don't have fennel you could try the baking soda, but remember VERY LITTLE.

He probably just overate... when babies eat off the breast it takes longer to get the food. When you switch to a bottle the milk comes out a lot faster with a lot more air and a lot of other stuff in the formula that your baby doesn't need. It sounds like your baby's body is taking care of the problem on its own but you can help him buy pumping and bicycling his legs and laying him on his tummy. It'll eventually pass and he'll be okay but call the doc if your still concerned. You can talk to a nurse and they can give tips and some peace of mind.

And ignore the rude comments about not knowing about a pump. I know from experience that when your pressed for time and you don't already have milk pumped ( which is hard to set up a back up supply at anytime much less 5weeks!) you do what you've gotta do. Next time you might try soy which is gentler and use a nurser bottle with a bag to reduce air.

Good luck

He probably just had a bad reaction to the enfamil. Keep breastfeeding him. My son is bf and the first time my sister gave him a bottle of formula he spit almost all of it back up (he had done the same thing in the hospital every time they tried to give him formula). If you're really concerned, call your pediatrician.

Breastmilk has natural laxative properties. Breastfeed him if he will take it and hopefully it will get out all the formula. Try using a pump to have someone else feed him since he is so sensitive to formula. Using a pump will also keep your supply from diminishing from skipping breastfeeding sessions.

He could be sensitive to regular formula. One of my children needed soy formula. I breastfed some of my children and formula fed some (not my choice, had serious problems). Formula is hard on their systems. Especially babies used to breastmilk. I would strongly suggest investing in a breast pump. It was a life saver for me. I had one child that wouldn't even take a bottle of my breastmilk. Only the breast. At least your little one took a bottle. Pumping also keeps your supply up and helps with engorgement. God bless and good luck.

Call your child's pediatrician. I would continue to breast feed. Do you pump? Switiching from breast milk to formula could have been the problem. My children were started out on enfamil. I switched over to Isomil soy. they both did fine on that. I never breast fed my children. Then again, I am not a doctor and my opinion would be to call your child's pediatrician for advice. I wouldn't switch from breast milk to formula right away when your baby is used to breast milk.

When switching from breast to formula or from formula to a different formula it generally upsets the baby. You need to go back to breastfeeding and pump the milk when you will be away from the baby for a long period of time. If you intend to ween the baby off of the breast milk you will have to do it slowly. Unfortunately, many babies will be fussy when switching from breast milk to formula.

Put a towel in the dryer and get it nice and toasty warm. Hold baby to your chest with the towel on his tummy (be sure it's not too hot!). I would invest in a breast pump in the future, sounds as if formula doesn't agree with him.

It will be out of his system soon. In the mean time just hold him, rock him, cuddle him, etc. Then in the future if you want someone to feed him a bottle try pumping.

Call the pediatrician...your baby could have an allergy to something in the formula. The pediatrician could give you some helpful advice and they would best know your baby's health.
