How do you see the Boy Scouts of America, in terms of politics? Left Wing, Right Wing, or something else?

This is mearly a survey. I am not against others opinions. I consider myselft a left wing and I recieved my Eagle Scout award back in August. As for the religious leader signing off, I don't go to church but I do practice Unitarian Univeralism. I have someone who practices the same religion. I had her write the letter and they accepted it just fine. I was never asked about it. As for homophobia, I have many gay aquaintances. They don't tell us to hate gays, or at least they never told me. They just don't accept them or let them join.

I don't see any political faction to the Boy Scouts. If you want one there you will have to supply it.

The Boy Scouts teach honesty, and loyalty. If anyone has a problem with those two issues that is someone who is not to be trusted....

Boy Scouts is a non-profit, quasi-religious organization which enjoys free speech, as well as the right to assemble and organize with no governmental control.

Government subsidy does not a government arm make.

Boy Scouts is apolitical. Until the ACLU decided to attack scouting, politics were never involved.

Even now, the boys are unaware of any political involvement, as it should be.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Oath Scout Law
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

A Scout is:
Trustworthy
Loyal
Helpful
Friendly
Courteous
Kind Obedient
Cheerful
Thrifty
Brave
Clean
Reverent

On the local level, I believe you will find much more tolerance than at the national level. The Mormons and the Catholics are the largest sponsors of scout troops and the national council isn't going to set any policies that might upset their two biggest "sponsors." The national council definitely has right wing tendencies. On the local level, you'll find people are much more liberal.

We are also Unitarian Universalists. My son left scouting for 4H and couldn't have been happier.

The national organization would probably be considered far right because of their anti-gay posture. Local troops are a good thing for kids that age. They teach service and wholesome values to kids at a formative age. Theres nothing wrong with learning the concepts of honor and integrity and the exposure to outdoor skills is just fun and maybe the only exposure a lot of urban kids will get to nature.

They've done amazing good work for Americans, as a conservative, traditionalist organization.

During Hurricane Katrina, there was a volunteer boy scout for every 2 victims. A remarkable ratio. The BSA deserves America's thanks.

Their oath starts: On my HONOR I will do my best to do my DUTY to GOD & my COUNTRY...

The 4 words I capitalized clearly mark the Boy Scouts as conservative. That is why the ACLU hates them so much.

Right wing - and potentially dangerous in our current political climate.

There was a time when I was young when the Boy Scouts were a truly positive force.

Over the past decade or so they have slipped into risking becoming the young new socialist party youth of the old national socialist party.

Which is really quite frightening if you know anything about early 20th century history. Much of their agenda has changed from a concentration on raising moral patriotic young men into brain washing them into right wing zealots.

Its unfortunate, but potentially inevitable considering the founder.

I think people try to make something out of it. but is was a loose religious organization when I was in. To get eagle back then you had to have a religious leader sign off on you.
