How do I solve this word problem? I'm not sure how to find the cubic feet of an area :(

A concrete floor is to be poured. It measures 100 feet by 50 feet by 4 inches deep. How many cubic yards of concrete are required?

Okay. First, the formula for Volume is V=l*w*h.

l=100ft, w=50ft and h=4inches OR (1/3)ft.

Therefore, V=100(50)(1/3) which becomes V=1,666.666 cubic yards.

Now, there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Therefore the answer divided by 27 will be in cubic yards.

This works out to be about 61.728 cubic yards.

A quick way, and the way finishers do it is find the square footage, which in this case is 50x100=5000, then divide by 81. A cubic yard of concrete covers 81 square feel at 4 inches deep. The answer is 61.728 yards. In reality, and because sub-grades vary, the job will usually take a little more. That's the way it's actually done on jobs. An alternate more accurate way is to is to calculate the number of cubic feet that needs to be filled. 5000sf at 4inches = 500x.33 (.33 is the percentage of 4 inches in 1 foot) This yields a volume of 1650 cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. 1650 divided by 27 = 61.11 cubic yards. Almost the exact same answer. The nice part about the other way is you can do it in you head on the job. If you need more accuracy, just carry the decimal point out .33333

You're actually looking for volume, not area.

4 in = 1/3 ft

Multiply the dimensions to get the volume:
(100)(50)(1/3) = 5000/3 cubic feet

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Therefore, 5000/3 cubic feet is equal to 5000/81 cubic yards.

Volume = Length x Width x Height (v = l * w * h)

First, you want to get everything into the same unit. I usually put everything into the smallest unit, which in this particular case, is inches.
1 foot = 12 inches
100 feet * 12 inches = 1,200 inches
50 feet * 12 inches = 600 inches
4 inches is, of course, 4 inches

V = (1,200")(600")(4") = 2,880,000 inches³

Now that we know the volume in cubic inches, we need to convert this to cubic yards. 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches. One cubic yard is equal to 1 yard * 1 yard * 1 yard. Since a yard equals 36 inches, we can also say that 36 inches * 36 inches * 36 inches equals 1 cubic yard.
1 yard³ = 36" * 36" * 36" = 46,656 inches³

Now set up a ratio:
46,656 inches³ / 1 yard³ = 2,880,000 inches³ / x yards³

Cross-multiply to get:
(46,656)(x) = 2,880,000

Divide both sides by 46,656 to get:
x ≈ 61.73 yards³

Volume of the room = 100 * 50 * 1/3 = 1666⅔ ft³
= 61 59/81 yd³
=61.728 yd³

Since no one read your ? close enough to see that you asked for cubic yards, not feet:

Cu ft = 50*100*(1/3) = 1666.66667, not 1650

1yd³ = 27 ft³, so the real answer to your ? ask asked is 1667/27 = 61.74 cu yd
