change it to 256 colors. I was soooo happy to get it to work, as it wouldn't, and then reinstalled windows 98 SE..yes, old one, but I am so glad it works now. I can't play games on it,though, because it won't let me change the colors. A friend says I need to download something to do with the video card? I went to IBM's sight and am lost there. It is an IBM Aptiva. I hope someone can help. Thanks so much!!

The problem is that you do not have the proper driver for the video card. Windows 98 is using a generic driver which only allows 16 colors.

Consult a technical person.

Updating your video card would help, but getting a new one would probably be more beneficial. I searched the IBM website, under their Support and Download tab. There wasn't anything to help you under that.

Buy a cheap video card, and put it in your computer, that will give you the 256, and probably more options.

Doesn't matter what the machine is as you have to have the correct driver for the video card that you installed. Once you find out who made the card you can go to their site and down load the driver for the operating system your using.

Download the drivers of your video card. These drivers would have come bundled with the motherboard driver when you bought the PC. Install these drivers and reboot your PC. Then, change the resoloution and colour depth from "Display" in Control Panel.

Download Aida32, Start it up, and click on Display, then on Windows Video, now you will see what Video card you have, and the address to Driver download, Download and install the Driver.
