Im looking to build a home file server with the ability to be logged into from a remote location?

A friend and I work on computers as a hobby and it’s a hassle and expensive to keep burning cds with the stuff we need. We want to be able to log into the server download and upload files we need. Is there a set of software I can use to build a file server accessible from remote locations? If possible I would like something web browser friendly and not a hassle to setup and maintain. Windows based server is preferred but not essential.

You could log to you own PC (or any other designated as server) as it is and access it remotely by enabling build into Windows „Remote Desktop”. Using Remote Desktop will give you same feeling as if you were sitting in front of your own PC (allowing accessing stored files or whatever you would choose to do). Considering however security flaws of Remote Desktop, in order of doing it in secure manner it would be necessary to use VPN client as this one for instance:

Most likely some other people will come with more robust and suited solutions, it’s just what crossed my mind,…
PS.
Unless you have really fast connection (I would say at least 6mbps – preferably more), potential problem with using server for files could be data transfer rate (if you would talk about some big files). Just think how much time it normally takes you to download few hundreds MBs of files from Internet.
