Linked genes are inherited together because they are close together on the same chromosome, and thus are less likely to be separated by recombination. Recombination refers to a process where chromosomes cross over each other and exchange DNA. So if 2 genes are spread apart on a chromosome, they are more likely to be separated by recombination, and thus less likely to be inherited together.
