This is the part of the flame where ample oxygen is available for complete oxidation of vapors. This blue flame occurs most often when supplemental oxygen is forced into the flame. An example of this is best observed with welding torches -- such as acetylene torches. With oxygen cut off, the flame is all yellow. But as oxygen is added, the flame becomes blue -- and much hotter as well!

The flame consists of colors because each part is a different temperature. At the top of the flame it is cooler because it is higher up and more contact with the air. The very base of the flame is also cooler because of the lack of oxygen and contact with the air.
The middle of the flame, the blue part, is the hottest end of the spectrum and is the hottest part of the flame because it is the best balance between oxygen and fuel. It burns the best, brightest, and hottest.

The color of fire can show two different things.

1. The temperature of the fire.

2. That a certain substance is being burned causing the color.

More complete oxidation of carbon occurring forming Carbon Dioxide with a hotter temperature. Where the flame is yellow there is less oxidation with some generation of carbon monoxide at a lower temperature.
