Duh, to get the boogers out. If you find something that works better than a finger, patent it!
Some people have a sinus condition that causes slow, constant draining and that causes boogers to form all day long.

With their fingers? It's gross, but little kids do it, too. I think anyone can choose to pick their noses privately with tissue paper or a napkin instead. I've also seen some older people do it in public...I think it's totally gross when people use their fingers and don't wash them afterwards.
Of course, they pick their noses to get their booger out or make sure that there's nothing on their noses. I suppose people can feel if there's something in their noses, making them feel conscious, especially when they have a cold or a runny nose.
By why do some adults pick their noses in public while others do it privately?
Would this mean that there are people who are more conscious than others or who don't really care what others think of their manners?

I have a friend who picks her nose repeatedly, but doesn't chew her nails, or do anything else like that. I think with her it is a nervous habit.

Life long habit. Or maybe it is comforting to get those dried boogers out.

I don't think it is psychological. I for one pick my nose. It is because the buger build up becomes uncomfortable. Picking is the only way to relieve this. mn
