Because conservatives live and breathe and promote fear. It helps them rattle vulnerable people into supporting their oppressive policies. Don't forget the "terror alert" gauge that pretty much got retired after the 2004 elections, the boogeyman Osama that Bush seems to revive every so often, and the Patiot Act.
"BE VERY AFRAID AND VOTE FOR THE GOP!!"
(This was the gist of a political ad released just before the November elections....fat lot of good it did them, too....)

One of the most important functions of any neocon group is the building of a core group that is united by fear. The cheapest way is to attack a group that has the most "open to interpretation" leaning.
"Us against them" is the oldest con game in America, which was even satirized in the film release of the "Music Man".
Question your neighbor, but heaven forbid you question your government.

I've never worried about a liberal in my life, I just resent their loud mouths and arrogance that they are right just because they read something on the Internet or had some kooky professor tell them.

because they have no idea what they are talking about...
conservatives commentators, politicians use "liberals" as the bogeyman and they eat it up... they don't have to have a real enemy or proof... only someone saying "everything that is wrong in your life... it's their fault"...
