Humans have the ability to look past (or perhaps look around, if you subscribe to the idea that humans delude themselves by ignoring reality) the undeniable fact that one day they will die, and eventually, there will be no one left that even remembers so much as there name.
Humans are able to go on, even after many of them come to grips with this fact, and still do more than what is required of them. Rather than all live in simple mud huts, procreate fiercely, and eat often (as would be our genetic wont if we followed the darwinian behavior pattern of most animals) we continue to strive for more, even those things that mean little; cell phones, laundry machines, and video games.
And that is a good thing.

They have an ability to reason that puts us above animals,(so we know better anyways when we act worse). Ultimately, no matter what the cause, they tire or sicken of violence or war and just want to live and let live mostly, and for that reason agree to laws of governance to keep the peace and group together into communities, that is one of the "good things" that gives me optimisim. Being brave enough to think outside the box, explore, try despite failures to overcome obstacles, to hear the cry for help and do what they can. The ability to fashion tools, make art, music and literature. The things that come easiest to mind anyways.
