(x+2) / [5(x+6)]

x^2-4x-12 = (x-6)(x+2)

5x^2-180 = 5[x^2-36] = 5(x+6)(x-6)

both the numerator and the denominator have the factor (x-6) so those cancel. You are left with:

(x+2) / [5(x+6)]

x² - 4x - 12 = (x -6)(x + 2)
5x² - 180 = 5(x² - 36) = 5(x + 6)(x - 6)

[(x + 6)(x + 2)] / [5(x + 6)(x - 6)] --- The (x + 6)'s cancel out...
(x + 2) / 5(x - 6)

x^2 - 4x - 12 / 5x^2 - 180

(x - 6) (x + 2) / 5 (x^2 - 36)

(x - 6) (x + 2) / 5 (x - 6) (x + 6)

(x + 2) / 5(x + 6)

(x + 2) / (5x + 30)

does that get you started....

x² - 4x - 12 factors to (x - 6)(x + 2).

5x² - 180 factors to 5(x² - 16) = 5(x - 6) (x + 6)

Cancel terms and you're left with

x+2
--------
5(x+6)
