I've used it before too, for embarrassing stories and for serious secrets.

You can write in in a diary, but someone can always find it or read it. You could tell a priest, counsellor or minister or other religious or mental/spiritual advisor.
There is a scene in the movie 'In the Mood for Love' where a character with a secret he can't tell anyone goes to a temple and whispers the secret into a hole in a sacred wall.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118694/
This is an adaptation of the Greek myth with a similar ending, except that the character whispers the secret into the knot in a tree and the tree branches whisper the secret to passersby.
Christopher Lee, who appeared in the Lord of the Rings among many other movies, was in military intelligence in WWII. He said this about keeping secrets:
'When people say to me, you know, were you in this? Were you in that? Did you work in this? Did you work in that? I always used to say 'Can you keep a secret?' And they would say 'Yes, yes' and I would say "So can I."'
The truth is that the only way you will keep the secret is if you say nothing and tell no one and never write it down. Then you have to live with the burden. Even if you tell only one person, if it serious information, it will eventually come out fully in the open. You have to decide if the emotional price of keeping the secret is higher than the emotional price of telling it, then decide, and abide by that decision.

I have to keep many secrets too and it isn't easy. Tell maybe your mother or your closest friend(s). That will probably calm you down a bit. But tell them NEVER EVER EVER EVER to tell anybody because this sounds pretty huge.

You would notbe alone......if you have to tell .......do it in confidence as in a councellor or doctor or some such. Depends how bad or otherwise it might be.....but lots of us walk about with a secret or two locked away inside.

Tell it to someone that you like to chat with and never meet before. This is a safe way and it's not good to keep it to yourself, cos it will keep on bugging you.

Tell a priest in confession or a psychiatrist, they have to keep it to themselves. Why do you have to tell this secret so desperately? If you've kept it for such a long time, what's the problem? More details please.
