Hah, i went through this problem for years, but i wanted a guinea pig. I found that guinea pigs make better pets than hamsters. They are MUCH sweeter, and they actually play with you. And you can take them outside too.
What i did to get my guinea pig, was show them guinea pig books, so they know what goes into owning one, so they knew i could handle it on my own (i was probably 11 at the time). I found costs for everything for a guinea pig so they knew they weren't too expensive, and i told them it would teach me responsibility.
That still didn't work, so i made a bet with them. We bet that i couldn't go 1 whole month without mentioning and animal. This was VERY hard because i asked for a guinea pig or a dog like 5 times a day. They KNEW i couldn't do it, so they said if i did do it, they'd get me a guinea pig. WELL, i did it. And they got me my first one, Cola. I've had 5 since then. Maybe you could try making a bet with them about something they KNOW you can't do, but you can show them that your NEED for a hamster enables you to want to do it so bad. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hamsters aren't that great as pets. I had one and it sucked. They are nocturnal, so while you are awake all they do is sleep, then when you try to sleep they are up all night scratching around or running on that wheel. They do smell also because no matter how often you change their bedding they love to horde food and they end up with their own urine all over their fur. They have to be conditioned to be handled and they will bite with teeth like razors if they smell something on you they think would be tasty or if you piss them off.

I would campaign for a different pet.

since you travel you can just ask a neighbor or friend to take care of him for a few weeks. They don't smell inless you never clean out there cage. this is what you should say and do to get your parents to let you have a hamster.say " don't you think i'm responsible? I'll take care of everything.
PLEASE!!!" And if they still don't buy it cry like crazy!!! LOL!!
or before you do any of that try to find info about hamsters and how to take care of them to show them you care or just buy a cage and then they'll have to let you get a hamster!!! I did all of this and now i have a hamser named Snickers!!!!

Hope i helped!

hamsters dont really smell, if you change the padding frequently or buy odor absorbing padding that is. but they are very nice pets. i have had mine for over a year now and its doing fine. they are really easy to take care of. make sure you chaeck the food and water because they can really go through food. my hamster is a dwarf hamster but any kind is good really. i let him rool in his ball now and then. even my dogs "love" him. ok, so they dont but thats not the point. what i'm sayin is hamsters are great and if you want one i say go for it.

Find out exactly how you can keep the smell down with them, explain to you parents exactly what you need to do for that. Have a plan for how you are going to pay for the food and any other care that they need. present this plan to your parents. If you show them that you know what you are talking about, then you may have a better chance.

Ask for a ferret.

Suddenly, a hamster will seem pretty reasonable.
