As a first time hamster owner, I've got to tell you that they are a lot of work. It's completely possible to make sure they don't smell by cleaning their cages every five or so days, but it can take up to an hour every time you clean their cage. They require a lot of exercise and attention to make sure they're tame. You need to watch them pretty much all the time they're out of their cage. They can be left alone up to two days if you go on weekend trips but they would be an issue if you went away for a couple weeks in the summer.

I would talk to your parents about how you would manage your time to care for your hamster. If you've been taking care of your dog, you can cite that as a reason you can handle another animal. Hamsters also have a life span of only about two years so it doesn't have such a long term commitment as a dog.

Be reasonable and discuss it over with your parents. Go online and do some research about the supplies you'll need and the time you'll have to put aside to care for a hamster before talking to them. If you give them a reasonable argument, they should be able to make a reasonable answer.

Your parents are right, unless the cage is kept very clean. You didn't say how old you are, or whether you help take care of the dog. Are you willing to feed him and clean up after him? Or do you have to be nagged? Or does your Mom just do it all-- in which case I can't blame her for not wanting to take on another pet. Show her that you can be responsible by getting your homework done and helping around the house without having to be asked, and maybe then she will listen. What will happen to the hamster when you travel? Do you have a friend who will care for him? Who will pay for the hamster and cage, and then his food and bedding for as long as he lives (which is only a couple years)? You need to have the answers to all these questions worked out before you even try to persuade her, and in the end, it is your parents' house, and if they don't want a hamster in it, you are out of luck. Good Luck!!

What part of NO do you not understand?

Your parents are correct -- hamsters have an odor that permeates the house and is near impossible to get rid of. Coupled with your family's penchant for travel means a hamster is not the pet for you.

I always have to persuade my mom to get me a new pet to. Heres what you do........ You beg your mom to take you to a pet store (one that carries hamsters) once you walk in to the pet store run to the hamsters and tell your mom to look around for a minute then start to look sad cause you dont have one and once your mom walks back over act more sad then before and then ask her if you could please have one and tell them what you would do to take care of it and say it could stay in your room and you would clean its cage every weekend. This works for me all the time! I wish you good luck!

Hah, i went with the aid of this venture for years, yet i wanted a guinea pig. i got here upon that guinea pigs make extra suitable pets than hamsters. they are plenty sweeter, and that they actually play with you. and you will take them outdoors too. What i did to get my guinea pig, substitute into instruct them guinea pig books, so they be attentive to what is going into possessing one, so they knew i ought to take care of it on my own (i substitute into probable 11 on the time). i got here upon fees for each little thing for a guinea pig so they knew they weren't too costly, and that i advised them it may instruct me accountability. that still did no longer paintings, so i made a raffle with them. We guess that i could no longer circulate a million finished month without declaring and animal. This substitute into VERY problematical because of the fact i asked for a guinea pig or a dogs like 5 circumstances an afternoon. They KNEW i could no longer do it, so they pronounced if i did do it, that they had get me a guinea pig. nicely, i did it. and that they have been given me my first one, Cola. i've got had 5 when you consider that then. possibly you should attempt making a raffle with them approximately something they be attentive to you won't be able to do, yet you are able to instruct them that your choose for for a hamster allows you to choose for to do it so undesirable. i'm hoping this facilitates. stable success!

Just behave yourself and take good care of the dog you do have, get good grades in school and that may sway them into letting you have another pet. Good luck
