Our solar system is located within the disk of our galaxy, just over half way from the center to the visible edge.

We are about 26,000 light years (this distance light travels in a year) from the center of the galaxy. The galaxy is about 120,000 light years across. So we are about a third of the way out from the center. The galaxy has several major "arms", the Perseus Arm, Sagittarius Arm, Centaurus Arm, and Cygnus Arm; we are in a minor arm named the Orion Arm.

Our Sun and all the Stars visible in the night sky are members of a vast grouping of Stars known as the Galaxy. Our Galaxy is spiral in shape, and has arms winding outward from a central bulge of stars (and possibly a Black Hole in the very center). It is roughly 100,000 light years in diameter. Our Sun lies in one spiral arm about 30,000 light years from the center of the Galaxy. Astronomers estimate that the Galaxy contains over 100,000 million Stars.
Interestingly, around our Galaxy are scattered more than 100 ball shaped clusters of stars known as globular clusters. These globular clusters contain from 100,000 to several million stars, each of which is quite similar to our own sun.
