This is my first year teaching, and I'm with 3rd grade students who are low academically and socioeconomically. Teaching these students is very difficult, but I find the demands of the TAKS test, special services, pull-out schedules (library, science lab, peer tutoring, content mastery lab) to add to my enormous load. Aside, I have a teamed coworker who physically beats on me in various ways leaving bruises, emotionally abuses me constantly, and goes through my desk drawers. I have alerted my principal to this but he says she isn't going anywhere because her student's always have high TAKS scores.
Im miserable. I thought I wanted to be a teacher but I am absolutely miserable. Is the field of education like this every where? I need advice. Im pregnant now and I really need to cut down on my stress level.

If your fellow teacher is touching you or beating you, tell the principal you are filing assault charges with the police. PERIOD. Next time the teacher does it walk into the office and call the police and wait. That person is not stable and should not be teaching children. Document everything. I dont care what kind of scores her kids get. Then look into transfering schools is obvious that the school you are in is out of control. Alert your union if you have one. No the education field is not like this everywhere else and if you are being told this you are being lied to in order to keep you from leaving. You may have signed up to teach troubled children you did not sign up to be a punching bag for troubled adults.

Education is not like this everywhere. Get out ASAP before it kills your passion. Seriously. I am fortunate to work in a very wonderful and supportive district. I have worked in other districts and know that there are some great ones and some awful ones. You started at one of the awful ones.
Until you can leave, contact your local NEA representative about the colleague abuse. That needs to stop immediately. If your principal isn't willing to do anything about it, he's part of the problem. Move up the food chain and find someone who is willing to help. My guess is that you are not the only one in your building feeling some sort of abuse.
Focus your efforts on the kids--that's why you're there and why you wanted to be there. As for the rest of the office politics, dig in, find allies, and push back unless you want to be pushed around for the next 6 months.

Teaching is so difficult today, especially with the type of students you are working with. I am more concerned with your co-worker doing any physical harm to you. Start documenting everything that happens, and if your principal does not do anything, go to the superintendent. And for what it's worth, try to leave your stress at the job when you go home. I know that's hard to do, but once you are home, you can't change anything so let it go! You might want to get into another school, things can be different and you can be happy in the right place.

teaching is a noble profession. It gives you a lot of stress, sacrifices , etc. I can relate to your story bec. i am also a teacher. Why don't you try to transfer in other school near to your house. If it is impossible, another suggestion is this, because you are pregnant now, don't mind them especially your teamed coworker. It is your child who will suffer. try to talk to a person who has a higher rank to your principal. If the work that your principal gave you is not related to your load, reject it. About your students who are academically and socioeconomically poor, change your teaching strategies. Think of some strategies which is suited for the learners. And lastly about yor co worker, did you file a case against them? you said they are beating you and leaving you bruises and abuses you emotionally, read a book about your rights... Every human has a rights... Don't let them hurt you again... Give your burden in GOD and He will never leave you...

I don't like it currently, but it is a steady paycheck. Would I advise anyone to go into it based on my experience... probably not. I'm sure there are good areas to teach in, but like any good jobs, those ones are much harder to get into. The state of teaching today is obvious by the fact that there is such a demand for teachers in some areas. If it was a great job, then there would not be the demand. Based on my experience, I can tell you that the job won't get any better, you'll just get better at dealing with it.

SUE your coworker for assault immediately the next time she does it. Make sure you document the bruising with photos and document out the wazoo. Sue her and the school both, they have been notified of the abuse. You should be able to get a few hundred thousand dollars easily. (I'm not kidding). Then, you will have plenty of time and money to make whatever decisions you need to make.

i advise you to begin to gather evidence against your co-worker. keep a secret log, writing down the events as they occur, including any witnesses present. if she physically abuses you in front of witnesses, report this abuse to the police. if you can convince the co-worker to lay off, the job would probably be more bearable.
