I've got a '97 Altima, and as of yesterday, it's been making these strange kind of clacking noises--only when I turn right, though. The car doesn't handle differently or anything when that happens, it's just the noise. Any idea what's going on?

You have the answer many times over. The CV joint is bad,so what to do.
Well if you keep driving it that way the joint could come apart,if that happens the car will stop moving. You will then have to be towed.I would look in your phone book(yellow)under CLUTCH REPAIR.They can replace that joint in about 20 minutes. They will charge you 1hr labor plus the part.I do them for $99.00 which comes with a lifetime warranty.I have replaced 1000's of them. They are very easy to replace. When you decide where to take it ask them to replace the axle seal while they are replacing the joint.I add the seal at no cost just to cover myself, because removing the joint may damage that seal, which will cause the transmission to leak.So don't forget to ask for the seal at the same time as the CV joint is being replaced.

If it is a clicking noise and the car is front wheel drive, it may be the cv joint. Alot of the time the boot and grease can be replaced before the whole joint has to be. That is cheaper than waiting and having to replace the cv joint. If it is a whining noise, it may be the power steering. Check your fluid and belt. If those are good, it may be the pump. Good luck. The sooner you get it checked the cheaper you will get out.

It may be a bad CV joint. If that's what it is you will have to have the axle shaft replaced. However no one can diagnose a noise over the Internet. Take the vehicle to a professional auto technician and have it properly diagnosed.

Shockey monkey lower than is a humorous human being. It sounds to me like you'd be low on powersteering fluid, or you brake pads will be stuck, which in turn might want to correctly be donning out your rotor, therefore projecting that screeching noise you hear. to maintain embarrassement, examine you ability steerage fluid first.

I agree, sounds like a cv joint. i don't recommend a repack on the boot. you are only prolonging the inevitable. replacing the axle shaft is the way to go.
