I lived in Rolla for 4 years while attending the University of Missouri-Rolla. Overall, I loved my experience there. The town is pretty small, and the main source of economy is the University. It's definitely not like California as far as bustling activity. But you can pretty much always find something to suit your interests. There are places to shop, nice restaurants to eat at, and bars to hang out in. There is also tons to do outside - Rolla is hilly Ozark country, so there are places to hike, fish, camp, etc.

I live about 104 miles to the SW of Rolla in Springfield, MO and while you will find the pace of live to be much slower here the party scene dosent have to be. Sure its not California where something is going on all the time but Rolla is a college town (University of Missouri Rolla) so Im sure there are plenty of partys to suit your needs.
Not to mention in the summer you will be close to Lake of the Ozarks where they have "Party Cove"
Do a internet search on that and you might have something to look forward too.

I've moved to Rolla Mo, but I'm from San Diego area originally.
Why are you contemplating moving here?
-If you are a student-then the school is top-notch, difficult, and technically based. Not a party school like San Diego State.
-If you have a family-than Rolla is great. School are quite good (better than in California), low cost of living (a $400K house in Calif. equals a $100K here; rental houses for $400/month), low taxes, cheap gasoline, and safe for kids to run around-no where to get into trouble.
-Parties? Almost non-existant. Depends on your scene. Fraternities&Sororities Yes; Nightclubs and dancing No. But St Louis is two hours away.
Is there any specific info you need?

We moved to Missouri last year from Riverside. It's totally different. Remember that this is the Bible Belt. Life is not as fast as CA. Rolla isn't a bad place, but I doubt you'll find it a party town.
I live in Mansfield, about 120 miles away.

don't listen to the guy above me. party cove is a hoosier fest on boats. its filthy and nasty human behavior.
Rolla is a college town. And most people go to Rolla for engineering. It get pretty boring down there. I know there a waffle house to eat at though. I've been there once. I t is close to the ozarks( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozarks ) so that something to do during the summer time at least.
You will be about an hour and a half away from St. Louis!

College Town. Redneck, country, small town, slow life style.
Bible belt. Good home cookin'. Cardinals Baseball Fans!
Rolla is about 1 hour and 45 min ride from St. Louis and Lake of the Ozarks about 3.5 hours from Kansas City, and about 2 hours and 15 min from Branson. It is in the middle of the state near the capital of Jefferson City.

My sister used to live in Rolla. She said it wasn't a bad place to live. The weather there is pretty nice, too.
