Same year as you 1969. I was 13 as well. It's interesting the year that we became fans because I'm a KC Chiefs fan. The 1969 Chiefs played the Vikes in the 1970 Superbowl. It's the last time the Chiefs appeared in a Superbowl. You will recall that the Chiefs won that game. I was so into it that I bought the Chiefs 1969 highlight album on vinyl (long before CDs were around).
I'm a lucky man because my wife loves NFL football as much as I do. We had season tickets for a 10 year stretch during the 1990s. We eventually had to let them go after a business related transfer to St. Louis. The St. Louis Rams are now my adopted home team but the Chiefs will always be my favorite team. I cheer for both except when they play each other. Then it's, "Go Chiefs!!!"
When the Vikes had Dennis Green as coach, it reminded me of when the Chiefs had Marty Schottenheimer as head coach. Both could get you to the playoffs but never to the Superbowl.
Vikes are on hard times this year. Back in the late 70s and 80s the Chiefs were terrible but I still pulled for them. We never sold out during those days so the home games were never on TV. Marty changed all that even though he never got us to the Superbowl. I remember the first year we had tickets. Opening game was against the Vikes. It was early September and blazing hot. Marty had not yet established a solid winning tradition so there was a bunch of available tickets in one endzone. Almost all of them were bought up by Viking fans. There were 10-12 thousand Viking fans that day and at times they were louder than the hometown fans. It was embarrassing. Chiefs fans made sure that scenario was never repeated in the games that followed.
Anyway, I could drone on and on about football. I've got to hit the sack. We're getting up early to go see some college football; the Missouri Tigers vs. the hated Kansas Jayhawks.

NFL - The Stop-Start Nature bores me. Why they wear padding is a complete mystery to me, it would be a whole lot better imo if they removed it all. Rugby - Also bores me to an extent. League is much, much better. League is more skilled, the players are fitter and the game makes sense. Hard hits, awesome skill (Inglis's set up in the Centenary Test is an example of this. Aussie Rules - As a League fan, I can't say much about it. But some of the goals they pull out are quiet good. Soccer - Most skilled, yet I get annoyed at after 90 minutes it's 0-0. When it's an end to end game it's pretty good to watch.

I have been a Viking Fan since Anthony Carter had over two hundred yards in a playoff game against the forty niners. I have been a fan for seventeen years now. There have been some ups and downs (Hershel Walker trade, the boat fiasco and many more) but I will be a Viking fan for life.

I got you beat. I've been a fan of the NFL since 1957 (I was 13) when I watched the Detroit Lions, who were actually good back then, win the NFL Championship. Sadly, they haven't won much of anything since then.
