I used to work as security guard, and I can tell you honestly what is going on...If you are not licensed than there are security companies that will train you, for training I had to pay $75 and about $20 for fingerprinting, but that was 5 years ago and I was hired to work on state property. These days starting pay for security guard here in FL goes in-between $7.50 up to $13.00 per hour. It depends how much experience you have and what education you have. Military or Law enforcement experience gives you great start. There are armed and non armed posts.
I can tell you the good side, which is easy work! Different shifts and lots of overtime, but the down side is that people give you no respect. I was called all kind of names like "low paid know nothing" or "wanna be cop", once I am in position to tell people what they can or cannot do I will always get that ignorance from them and almost every day someone will tell me to "go get an real job" I worked also in mental institution with very ill patients who will bite and spit at any given moment, most of them had AIDS and other contagious disease, but when it comes down all of us guards will take bullet for each other. After years of humiliation I decided to move forward and become something better than security guard. I think that the American idea of security guard is that stereotype of an old guard sleeping in a corner of a bank, but these days security officers do much more that they used to. So I wish you all the best and I have to tell you that there are many opportunities in security field.
Contact me directly for more information I will be glad to help!!

There are many factors that play into how much a security guard makes. Companies usually pay their officer from the billable hours that they invoice the client for. The higher the hourly bill rate the better the pay. Typically an guards can make minimum wage up to $30.00 an hour. This of course is dependent on your ability to be licensed to carry a firearm or you work unarmed. Another factor is if you work for a reputable company or not. Try to get ever guard license and training so that you are more valuable to the company.

It makes me sick how ignorant people are. I was reading the "Best Answer" above and it's a damn shame that this person was called "low paid know nothing" or "wanna be cop". Some people are such morons! What would we do without security guards? No matter what someone's job is, EVERYONE'S job is important! We NEED security guards. Some people may think working at a fast food place is low. But if you walk in there and no one is working, who will get your lunch? As I said, everyone's job is important. No one should ever put the word "just" or "only" in front of what they do for a living. They should be proud of their work and that they are making an honest living. Okay, security guards might not make big bucks, but we need you! You are a very important part of our safety. As I said, everyone's job is important! And anyone who is such a moron and would put down a security guard, the person who is there to protect them, they deserve a good hard punch in the face!

Patriot Self Defense system achieves success for 2 primary reasons. The first is that it make use of straightforward steps integrated from all the very best fighting designs available. The second is that the manufacturers of this program really did not quit there, they took these steps into the lab and ran all form of scientific examinations to accumulate as much data as feasible prior to readying to work to analyze this information and put together a scientific industrialized self-defense system that fairly honestly reinvents the market.

It depends on what city/town you are in as certain markets pay less or more based on the cost of living in that region of the company. It also depends on the company you are working for. I would suggest applying with a hotel as the major ones hire directly. If you go with a security firm, contact the Better Business Bureau to make sure they are a legitimate business and not a fly by night operation.

By the way, the White House is protected by the Secret Service and that requires an extensive background check, a degree, and prior experience in Law Enforcement.

Some companies will hire you with no experience as long as you have some prior customer service and/or retail background. Some will hire you based on your ability to give a strong interview and sell yourself. Some companies want up to 2+ years security background. Go online and check your local Marriott's, Hilton's etc. under their career sections

I work at a Marriott hotel in Baltimore MD making almost $15/hr. Its a great relaxing and easy job to do. I also attend college and this job has been very accomadating to me. I used to work as a security guard at a hospital and hated. Hotel security is wayyy better and more relaxing and less stressful than being in a hospital security role for sure.

In the state of California you have to get your guard card, live scan fingerprinting, and a background check which ranges from $171-$225. There are mandatory classes you must take as well that will be additional funds which would range from $500-$800 Including the money you payed towards your guard card. Majority of these jobs in Ca. you have to have a minimum of 40 hours mandatory classes to get hired to most jobs.

I am a security officer and have been since 1994. My present company I have been with since 2007 and have NOT had a rise in that time. In fact my hourly rate was reduced without consultation by 25p per hour early in 2013.
