1. The triple R ranch. Launched during the first season of The Mickey Mouse Club as an 11-minute daily serial, The Adventures of Spin & Marty chronicled the exploits of working-class youngster Spin Evans (Tim Considine) and pampered rich kid Marty Markham (David Stollery) along with their pals spending the summer at the Triple R Ranch. Twenty-five episodes aired between November and December of 1955, an astonishing output executed by efficient director William Beaudine. The shows are all in black-and-white which might at first seem limiting, but instead infuse the proceedings with a timeless quality. Joining the boys as regulars were fatherly foreman Bill Burnett (Harry Carey, Jr.), personable wrangler Ollie (Leonard P. Greer), stoic ranch owner Col. Logan (Roy Barcroft), Marty's persnickety butler, Perkins (J. Pat O'Malley), and painfully stereotypical Chinese cook George (Sammee Tong). The acting is a bit uneven -- and not just from the children -- though the performances seemed genuine, thus easing the viewer's incorporation into their world.

3. My Three Sons

4. Patton

5. George C. Scott, playing Patton, for being a coward
