The film's wealthy and charming main character is in a car crash with his psychotic admirer and his face is horribly disfigured. Consequently, he suffers from some real self-esteem issues, and his newly found romance with the girl of his dreams fades out almost before it began. However, he takes advantage of new technology which allows his brain and consciousness to continue "living" in a dream-like state while his body is cryogenically frozen. This advanced program allows the participant forget his/her "death", thus providing a self-guided illusion of reality making the person believe that he is still alive. After the point where the dream begins (the moment of the splice is indicated in the movie) everything is basically a very realistic dream. Like in all dreams, what happens is controlled (at least subconsciously) by the person experiencing the dream. The strange things that happen in the second half of the movie (the two female characters switching back and forth, his face switching back and forth between being disfigured and not, the strange circumstances surrounding his crime) are products of his own mental torment. Finally, the people who run the dream program make contact with the main character within his dream and inform him of what has been going on. He realizes the truth and is thus able to come to terms with what has happened. At the very end, he chooses to end the dream and come back to life.

In Vanilla Sky, before Tom Cruise kills himself after being so distraught from have his face disfigured and losing Penelope Cruz, he signs the contract with the company to "preserve" his life so that he will be able to be alive at some point in the future. While he is "preserved" they are able to let him dream about whatever he wishes. That's why all of a sudden his face is fixed and he gets back with Penelope Cruz. But then his dreams start to go wrong and that is why the man appears (Tech Support) in which he can either continue his dream state, or he can wake up. It is kind of confusing because you don't really know what's what until the end. His face was disfigured in the car accident with Cameron Diaz. It was kind of teaching not to treat people so coldly. I hope I explained a little bit. I actually love that movie.

Hi Jaebird
If I remember rightly, the movie is basically about a technology that allows for an individual before dying to have one's conscience and memories downloaded in a format that will be preserved into infinity. Kinda an alternative to immortality.

However, the programming used to store the main character memories -these can be real and/or fabricated- malfunctions owing to a glitch in the programming. The main character's (Tom Cruise in the American version) conscience, overrides the programming and becomes aware that in fact the life is living, after he collapsed outside the disco, is in fact an artificial construct.

Hope this helps.

Well, Vanilla Sky is actually a remake of a movie called "Abre Los Ojos." If you watch the original, I'm sure it'll help you with the meaning of the remake. Not to mention, it's a million times better.

The movie is quite confusing. But everything that is happening to him, he is doing to himself...some how in a weird way. I can't explain it right, but I know I'll never watch it again! lol
