Why does it seem some actors or actresses always choose to do movies below their acting skills. Uma thurman comes to mind. After stuff like Be Cool,Super-Ex,Paycheck, and Batman you would think she would learn. Anybody know any other actor with poor movie choices.

Even actors have to eat and pay bills.
Besides, you have to keep visible.

Uma has a lot of competition from ever younger actresses. She takes what she can get and tries to make the movie better than it might have been otherwise. That has, in a way, become her specialty. She keeps working when others equally as good don't.

And she's an actor, not someone looking for a Nobel prize in creativity or drama. Fame is the reward actors get where in actuality they often add the creative edge that makes a film meaningful. The credit will go to the writer or director, of course.
That can get old after a while.

First I want to say that I take exception to the question, "Be Cool", 'Paycheck" and 'Batman Begins" were all decent movies. Granted they were not Oscar calibur, but they were entertaining.

Lately, Sean Connery has missed some good movies and tried to make up for it doing bad ones.

Thankfully Jackie Chan has retired. A lot of his movies for the past 15 years were horrid.

Drew Berrymore is in need of a good role. She deserves more challenging parts than that of love struck ditz.

Rodney Dangerfield really hit bottom in his last few movies. It is a pity that he went from an Oscar-worthy performance in "Natural Born Killers" (only to be snubbed by the accademy) to the likes of "My Six Wives" and "Back By Midnight"

Anthony Hopkins has made some really bad movies over the years ("The Edge", "The Remains Of The Day", "Shadowlands", etc) but his acting in not the flaw in the film-he is usually fantastic in his roles. However, only once in a while does the film lives up to the quality of his work.

There are lots of diffferent theories. Which version do you want? The origins of the term are hotly debated, and it's true origin is unknown. Breaking one's leg is certainly not a good thing to hope for - therefore perhaps by some superstition, if the "good luck" causes bad, then perhaps the perceived bad luck of breaking one's leg causes good. However, the most commonly perceived true meaning of "break a leg" is the wish for many curtain calls. When you bow or curtsy, you are supposed to put one foot behind the other and bend at the knee, "breaking" the leg. Other theories suggest that the words "break" or "leg" are not used in their literal sense. For example, some have suggested that "break" refers to the act of breaking out onto the stage, or that the "leg" refers to the legs of the audience's seats. Another theory suggests that the term "break a leg" is actually an abbreviation for the phrase "break a legend", which roughly means "go get yourself out there"! It could be a reference to the wooden legs in old curtains. If a cast were to have many encores, the curtain would be lifted and dropped until the legs broke. Any time a person or an object moves through or past a drop, they are said to be "Breaking Curtain." The thin curtains that mask the wings are referred to as "legs" Therefore, to enter from the wings, an actor must first "Break a leg." Back in the day, particularly in the era of vaudville, variety shows consisting of assorted talent acts were fairly common, and often the crowd's reaction led to a person being either allowed to finish their act, or forced off the stage, but even a few minutes in the limelight was good exposure for an actor. Ergo, even if their performance wasn't great, or if the actor was shot down before he got a chance to perform, he still had managed to get his name and face out there by breaking the legs. Another theory suggests that the term "break a leg" is actually an abbreviation for the phrase "break a legend", which roughly means "go get yourself out there"! It has also been peculiarly suggested that the origin of the phrase dates back to Shakespearean days. Apparently at the time, the poor and uneducated (often slow and dimwitted, and referred to as Groundlings) unable to afford real seats, would crowd the front of the theatre, right up against the stage. Transfixed by the performance, when they got really excited the Groundlings were customarily known to drool! Prior to their performance (on a stage besieged by eager Groundlings), actors would wish each other good luck by saying, "May you give such a stirring performance that you fall on the ensuing spit of drooling groundlings, and break a leg!" It was once common for people to believe in Sprites. Sprites are actually spirits or ghosts that were believed to enjoy wreaking havoc and causing trouble. If the Sprites heard you ask for something, they were reputed to try to make the opposite happen. Telling someone to "break a leg" is an attempt to outsmart the Sprites and in fact make something good happen. Sort of a medieval reverse psychology. Take your pick as to which one you like best. I'm sure that for each one I have listed there are 10 more theories. It's kind of like the question "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?" The world may never know.

Leslie Nealson with the Naked Gun movies - they are silly and fun to watch but he's a much better actor than how he's portrayed in them. And, Kevin Costner has definitely made some very bad choices over the years but I feel redeemed himself with his role in The Upside of Anger.
