Shakespeare's play is set in the city of Verona, Italy, in the late 1500's. Shakespeare wrote the play in 1595, and there is a reference in Act II, Scene 1 to a great earthquake that rocked Europe "a dozen years fore." Geologists know that there was such a temblor in 1583. So, it's a good bet that the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet occurred as the author was doing the writing.

In terms of historic eras, this would have been the late renaissance in Italy.
