People's opposition to breastfeeding does not stem from the 'sexualization' of the breast, but from society's standards of appropriateness. It's inappropriate for a woman to expose her breast in a public place, just like it would be inappropriate for me to remove my shirt in a public place. I know that breastfeeding is a natural and necessary bodily function, but so is having a bowel movement, and I don't want to see that while I'm eating either.

I think it's funny that our society has developed in such a way as this is a question worthy of debate. Women do not insist on breast feeding in public, their children insist on eating! In case you didn't realize the natural function of a breast is to provide nourishment for offspring. Babies need to eat and mothers need to be in public places. When the two coincide then, yes women breast feed in public. I ask you, would you eat in a bathroom? Why should my child?

I think if she's careful it usually okay. But as some folks have mentioned, there are places where it's innappropriate, like a fancy restaraunt. In those places she should probably take a powder, feed the kid in the can, go back out to her car, whatever. I don't have any problem with it at a bus station, waiting room, in a park, places like that.

And let's face it, you don't HAVE to look at them.

All in all, it don't find it anywhere near as offensive as really fat, old people in skimpy bathing suits, a dozen teenage girls sitting around a burger joint with half of their *** cracks showing, loud, half-drunken clods that assume everybody in the place is interested in whatever they are braying at the top of their lungs about, etc.

But part of being in public is sometimes having to put up with stuff others are doing, saying and wearing that you might find annoying. And, as I implied, I have to put breast feeding pretty far down the list of those behaviors.

Usually they do not insist. Their sweet baby does! I say look the other way if you do not want to watch a woman feed her child.
Usually women who have not breastfed or who did but were uptight about it, are the ones who usually have a problem with it. Breasts are made for feeding. A woman who breastfeeds is not having a sexual moment when she has to feed in public. Seriously.

First of all, it's ridiculous that we as a country are so afraid of but obsessed with breasts. Please! This woman isn't a stripper- she's feeding her CHILD! And as a mother, she has a right to enjoy public spaces while doing so. It's a shame that people are so eager to sexualize breasts even when they're being used as nature intended.

I think people also get afraid of seeing the body used in a way that is so "natural." It reminds them of animals. They're afraid to publically face the fact that their "divine" souls are attached to a functional body. Personally, it think that's unhealthy. Hide the bathroom because it's gross and unsanitary. But breastfeeding? People always have the choice to not look.

i think its nothing wrong in feeding the baby in public. its natural God given gift to women who can feed and the baby has to be fed. The mother should be modest about it and cover it in such a way that it is not offended. Further it depends upon the mentality of the person who is looking at the women and what is his / her mind. I think its natural and should leave it without any wrong thought in our mind. But a sensible women will cover her breast and c hild with the shawl so that it is done in discreat.

I really don't think it's a big deal. The baby insists, not the mother. I appreciate discretion but have to wonder how somebody can be offended at this very natural act. Breasts are for feeding babies, after all.

As a guy I take absolutely no issue with women breastfeeding in public. If a woman has the strength of character to do so, then by all means I support her (emotionally) in her efforts. I like to wear open-front unbuttoned shirts in the summer, it would be hypocritical to condemn a woman for less exposure.

I remember the first time I saw a woman breastfeeding, it totally caught me off guard and it took me a few looks to figure out what the heck she was doing, lol.

My goodness, people are so afraid of the human body, what are you people teaching your kids?

Ifind it interesting the number of different answers you have gotten. Some were downright stupid. But here is my answer....

Breasts are nice to look at, feel, etc... but the reality of it is, they are only there for ONE reason, to feed a child. That is there reason in life. Nothing else. BUT since that doesnt last so long, women use breasts for other things. Advertising etc.
The problem is not that my child is hungry, the problem is that your a pervert (not YOU but you know what I mean)
