I've run a virus scan and a spyware scan with no aide. It works fine for a little bit then it slows down to almost a complete stop. It took me about 6 hours to run the virus scan because it ran so slow. Any advice?

you need to defrag it
go to my computer - right click on your main drive (usually c) and click properties. In properties, click on the tools tab and then defragment. This also might take a few hours so do it overnight.

another reason that I know of is that you are running too many programs at once. Even though only 2 or 3 are showing on your toolbar, there may be some that are running in the background.
Other than that, go to your local guru and get suggestions. You may need to reload windows, or get more harddrive space.

Assuming you have Microsoft as your operating system, Open internet explorer, go to tools then internet options....Clear your cookies, on and off line temp files. Perform disk defrag (you should do this at least once a week) then once that is complete perform disk cleanup (at least once a week) then run your antivirus scan. Then go to another source for free such as "housecall by trendmicro" and run and illiminate the viruses there. Restart computer. If still having the same problem you most likely have low memory. Increase memory and your problem should be solved. Good luck

If you are using a dial up connection, that is just the way it is. Try deleting any junk you have on there that you do not need or want. Have you run a scan disk? Totally shutting down the computer and turning it off for 5 minutes and then back on can also help. Do you need more memory? Adding some can sometimes help. Good Luck.

It could be that some of the operating system files are still infected though you have scanned you virus and spyware. It is better to reinstalled Windows and Office with vital softwares needed for operations. This time you should learn to ghost "Use Norton Ghost" to keep all your softs and if you will have problem next time, just unpack the ghost, things as as original, not need to reinstalled one by one.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

You probably have a virus/adware your PC can't detect. What you should do is:

Update your virus scanner/adware detector

-or-

Do a system restore

-or-

if that still doesn't work, then (Last Resort)

1. Save everything (harddrive) to disks
2. Look in your PC manual for the keys to PC restore
3. Conduct a PC restore which will erase everything on your harddrive
