Dump the contents often. Remove the filter often also, and clean up the insides..Use soap and water, and let dry before reinstalling the filter assembly.
Disposable Heppa Filters are common, with these you toss the filter and replace with a new one, when near capacity.

HEPA filters are designed to be used up and replaced. It's a way that the vacuum money can continue to make money off of you, even after you've bought the vacuum.
It makes sense to replace it, though, if you're worried about air quality, because whenever you open up a filter, some of that gunk gets back into the air.

I have a eureka with a hepa filter and I take mine out and blow it real good with my air compressor. I have even rinse my filter with warm water until the dirt disappeared but let it sit out and dry for a few days before using it. It didn`t hurt my filter at all!!

A hepa filter is disposable. You don't clean it, you replace it.
If yours has a filter you clean, it is not a true hepa.

I would tamp it out or vacuum it with another vacuum cleaner if it was paper. Some non paper types can be washed and then dried or let dry.
