I guess the implied questions is: why the hell are we circumcising boys? It has been pretty much established that circumcision serves really no hygenic purpose and is simply a matter of tradition. When my son was born out of curiosity I looked up how many boys get circumcised and it's actually less than 50% now in the US. I think people are catching on that circumcision really serves no purpose and is actually very painful for the baby.

It is not true that "almost all" get circumcised these days. Only Judaism and Islam are the two major religions which mandate male circumcision. Doctors in most developed countries now do no longer circumcise male babies, unless the parents demand it. It is a fallacy to believe that circumcision is necessary for hygiene. Any man or boy can keep himself clean despite his foreskin. The purpose of the foreskin is to protect the sensitive glans, which is exposed during sexual intercourse. Men who have not been circumcised can experience higher sexual pleasure during intercourse than those men who lost their foreskins earlier in life.

Protection, it stops keratin building up on the end of your knob and keeps it sensitive. It is also designed to suck up germs and kill them by delivering them straight to white blood cells, unfortunately Aides evolved to exploit this by attacking the immune system first, it uses the foreskin to deliver the virus.
Long before this it was originally a fashion statement begun by Queen Victoria at the end of her reign when she was going mad/crazy and declared that Englishmen were the sons of the Israelites and should therefore be circumcised, all the colonies especially the US with it's Puritanical leanings went for these pronouncements in a big way, it died out here but has remained unquestioned until now in the US, just as it has begun to serve a legitimate purpose in Africa where anal sex is the most common form of birth control.
God doesn't really come into it as our abstract creation.

I think men evolved foreskin for a couple reasons. The biggest is to keep the penis sensitive. For a wild animal having sex is dangerous, but it the penis is really sensitive the man can enter the woman and orgasm right away (premature ejaculation). Reproduction is big in evolution.
Also, running around without any clothes, there are thorns and brush, the foreskin helps pretect the head head of the penis from that.
The foreskin may have caused fewer problems in the past because there were fewer diseases. What is known is there are very few benefits to having a foreskin today.
But just like some people are born without wisdom teeth some men are born without foreskin. I personaly wish that was a lot more common. ;-)
I don't know, hope that helped?
Lots of love,
Sara

Actually circumcision isn't all that common when you look at world population. And most doctors agree there is no medical reason for circumcision. The foreskin keeps the glans (head of the penis) warm, protected, and moist. All things it should be. Also, the foreskin has many nerve endings and therefore is a very sensitive part of the penis. As for hygiene, well if women can learn to clean themselves so can men. I certainly wouldn't cut my son's ears off if he often forgot to was behind them but instead would instruct him better. Something to think about.

Well Mishy,I still have mine after all these decades of hard use.It is surmised that the foreskin acted as a form of protection on the appendages of our ancient ancestors in the times before there was clothing. Many millenia ago, when they were hunters the foreskin prevented the most sensitive portion from recieving damage due to contact with brambles and whatever else grew where they stalked their prey.Just wouldn't do to have ol' tallywhacker scratched up and out of action.

It HAD the purpose of protection before, more than 4000 years ago, when people walked around naked in the bushes.
But nowadays it has NO PURPOSE WHATSOEVER. Scientists who study evolution have concluded that the foreskin will eventually disappear.
The only purpose it has right now is to increase the risk of contracting AIDS-HIV and STD's to men who are not circumcised. Have a look at: http://icuxbridge.icnetwork.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=14095142&method=full&siteid=53340&headline=-circumcision-protects-against-aids--name_page.html
And remember: circumcision is NOT an amputation. Don't beleive those who want to mislead you.

Yeah, the question has to be more evolutionary than religious; we've already pretty much proven that evolution is happening all around us, and that means most of our traits have been derived from what existed before us. Like someone said before myself, it's like asking what the appendix is still doing there? All it does is sit around and eventually cause us a lot of pain if something happens to it, and we chop it off.
So the answer has to be that it served some function that may or may not help us as we are today.

1) There is no god,
2) Foreskins dont all have to be removed anyway,
3) the foreskin's function is protection from friction as the labia do for the clitoris.
In Africa some practice female circumcision "Why did god put them there if they just need to be removed?"
