I know the hardware is good, the drives are found in Add Hardware, and the fact that both drives went dead, and their drivers corrupt/missing leads me to believe that a virus caused the damage. I've already run several full virus scans, and restarted several times, how can I restore the drivers, and consequently, the drives bak to health?

If both drives went dead it might be something as simple as the flat cable that connects to them inside the PC.

Shut the PC down

Take the cover off the PC and be careful not to move the cable until you see where it plugs onto the motherboard. Make sure the connector is fully seated on the motherboard connector and then reboot the PC and see if that fixes it.

Hope this helps!

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem cn be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful.
