man, i feel for ya. try and help them organize, it'd be a nice christmas present. gather different boxes, label them and start putting things away. clean out a closet, so that you can put your boxes into there when you are done. pack ratting is ok, as long as you have a system of organizing all the clutter. if i haven;t used something in over 6 months i usually throw it away.

I'm a pack rat. I use to keep only things that were what I considered art supplies, books, material (for quilts), things my kids made in school, etc.
Since our last move, seems I can't get everything back into hidden places!
Personally, I would not want someone to come into my home and do away with the things I have. I will do it myself, and have a give away.
Rest assured however, that some of the things within these walls, belong to our sons, my mom, etc. Seems when people see we have an empty space, they seem to believe I will give it a safe home, until they need it. HA!
Maybe, part of the clutter in your parents home, is like that in mine. Not only theirs!
Rummage sales are wonderful! You can make $$$$ with everything you no longer wish to keep around. Suggest that to them, and then suggest they use the $$$$ for a weekend getaway! Someones junk is another person's treasure..

Here's what i suggest. Talk to your parents about organizing their house. Do only one room at a time so as not to send them into shock. I think you'll be surprised how willing your parents will be to work with you.You could start with only 3 box's. One box will be for keeps. One for donations. And one for trash. If you only throw away 10 items each day and fill the donation box once a week. You will find your self with more space in no time. You'll also feel better about you home. Just bare in mind, you are working with pack rats, you will have to keep up the work or things could get ahead of you again without you realizing it. Good Luck and Happy Cleaning. Enjoy the donating it will give you a sense of helpfulness and allow someone else the chance to have all the things you thought would never be used or even seen again.

Hey, it's your parents house. All I can say is don't be a pack rat when you get your own place. By the way, maybe you could help tidy up for Christmas, but you better be sure you don't throw out anything they might want lol. Good luck.

Your parents may be breaking the law , your house could be considered a firetrap . Bring it up with your Parents and tell them they will get fined if the local bylaw enforcement officer finds out.

help them get organized by hiring one of those organizer people or you could do your self by putting up a few shelves and sorting things into clear, labeled bins
