This is/was a cover story, the big increase was actually caused by the depression and the absolute failure of pure speculative Capitalism. America made a fortune out of WW2 but it was the New Deal reforms introduced by Roosevelt that created a new form of Socialist Capitalism that enabled the system work again and in a manner that would not involve huge cyclical swings of the economy.

The Soviet Union was nearly out of the picture until WW2. WW 2 and Roosevelt created the nioghtmare which became a cold war.

WW2 also changed Europe, Africa , Middle East and Asia in ways which forced the USA to spend trillians in keeping the Sovet threat down.
Blacks in the military helped to lead to the removal of segregration . This in turn also lead to more federal intervention in school, colleges, and the work place which invilved in huge sums of federal money.
WW2 led to Germany and Japan becoming comercial super powers and led to direct competetion with America. This chalanged america for control of the world's commerce and superiority in industry.
WW2 led to the liberation of American Women in the work place, which in turn led to more federal intervention in the workplace in assuring they got equal treatment or close.
Women during WW2 amassed a lot of clout and began to enter politics seriously. Their proformance in both the military and the facturies moved them form the house to the factories and other jobs permently as bread winners, and oftem main care takers for the family.
WW 2 which resulted in a stronger Sovet Union led to a hostile amosphere all over the world, and resulted in the USA govt spend trillions in proping up pupet governments worldwide to slow the Spvet advance into poor and uneducated countries. These times also forced the states into a more subservent position as far as the USA govt was concerned.

In order to conserve resources needed to fight the war, it was nessecary to impose large amounts of governmental control on the products that were for sale in stores (it's called rationing). There are some other examples, but that's the only one I know.
