Shame is when you feel badly about yourself, guilt is when you feel badly for something you've done.

It's a shame that there's so much guilt in the world. A judge will find someone guilty, whether that person feels guilty or not.
Shame is just the other side of pride. If you're ashamed to ask for charity, it's because you are too proud. The opposite of shame/pride is humility. Humble people are never ashamed.
