A very good starting point, would be the coolant temp. sensor. It is located in the thermostat housing, right on the front top section of the motor. When they go bad, they will tell the computer system, the wrong temp. I would say, about 80 percent of the time, this will take care of the problem. The part cost appr. $20, and don't take hardly anytime at all. Just lower your antifreeze level a little bit, and replace the sensor. Don't start your engine, for about 45-60 minutes, to let the sensor get the same temp as the engine...

Change the O2 sensor Its probably the original. When these go bad it will cause the engine to run rich and you will get that fuel smell from the car after medium to hard acceleration or when coming to a quick stop. I had this Problem On my Chevy Lumina and the O2 sensor was just bad It cost me $32.00 at auto zone and it took me about 15 minutes to replace (very easy to do) Now my car gets on average 24 Miles per gallon and it has over 120,000 miles on it. When the O2 sensor goes bad on older cars the check engine light will not come on like it does on new cars.

your timeing could be to far advanced or not enough, or failed plug letting to much fuel in cylinder. have a diagnostic check done on it to narrow your problem
