For casual, entertaining reading I turn to suspense writer Harlan Coben. He is clever and funny with a great deal of intensity without resorting to messy blood and guts, although his stories are populated with bad people, he doesn't wallow in their degradation. Margaret Millar is another fabulously clever suspense writer. Her work is out of print, but can easily be found used on Amazon.com

It would be difficult for me to chose one. Either The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain or 1984 by George Orwell. Of the two authors, Twain is my favorite.

Another interesting book I read (not on a level of literature above, but simply because of the idea) was Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, because of the interesting spin the author makes on the Wizard of Oz (telling it from the Wicked Witch's point of view).

The Lord of the Rings, ever since I read it when I was a teen. It was both very entertaining and had a very strong and deep moral fiber about it that has not been equalled by many other books written for adolescents.

The other books I like are the Brothers Karamazov, the Name of the Rose, and the Famished Road.

Mt favorite is a short story and I can't even recall the name or the author. But the story only had one character who appeared as the bartender, the man, girl, the father and the time traveler. You'd have to read it to understand it but it is a mind blower!

JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and the "Lord of the Rings" books. They enchanted me with the language and beauty of a new world. I fell in love with fantasy books after that and eventually branched out to include sciene fiction. Tolkien will always be first for me, though.

I used to be strictly an Arthur C. Clarke fan... however I did eventually branch out and will read, or try to read, just about anything.

My favorite works (I have two can't help it...) - as a child Rendezvous with Rama; as an adult The Dragon Never Sleeps...

Cool question.
