There is a wood strip that runs around the door frame called a stop. It's about one and a half inches wide and half an inch thick. Pry this loose, away from the frame, by the knob. (You can pry it with a screwdriver, flat bar or butterknife.) You will see the lock latch, the thing that moves in and out of the door. Using something sturdy and flat, like a credit card, push against the latch. It should slide back into the door. Good luck!

Have you tried to take a stiff but flexable card (credit card is too stiff) and slide it in the frame where the door knob is so then you end up sliding the latch that opens the door. Some times you might have to start tword the bottom of the latch then work you're way up. This has happened to me a few times and that is what I have done. Let me know if it works. It might take a few times.

stick a car in betweek the door and the latch, most locks can open this way. really depends on if it is an interior door or exterior. interior doors should be simple.

If it is a bedroom lock, it has a small hole on the outside....something a little bigger then the paperclip should do it. Just insert it in the center and it seats in the mechanism. Allen wrench should do it.

You could try a screwdriver, in the slot where the key goes. If it's just a tiny round hole, try a small nail. Just push in hard and turn knob.

They probably meant never take a piercing gun to your own ear. Claire's has pierced millions of ears, so if there was a problem with the way they did it, you would likely know about it.
