They were too small of a nation to take on the largest industrial power in the world, let alone taking on the rest of the allies.

Because they were very low on oil and could not form a heavily mechanized army (tanks, etc) so they put much of their money into their Navy, which was devastated at Midway, then they dug in and fought a defensive war, inflicted many casualties, but lost their entire army on each island in the process. America simply had a larger industrial capacity and America's technology soared during the war, by the time the war came to a climax all the Japanese weapons, which were state-of-the-art at the beginning of the war, were by then worthless piles of junk. They did not have the industry or technology. They did have, however, morale and their impression of honor as well as the advantage of being dug in.

For many reasons, including:
1. The US economy and industry was significantly greater than that of Japan - we could build more ships and airplanes faster than they could destroy
2. Overall, Japanese army and airforce trainning was not as good as ours. We trainned our soldiers for much longer. Also, as the war dragged on, most of the Japanese ace pilots and ground veterans died in combat.
3. China, Korea, Phillipinos, Great Britan, India, Australia, etc all had ground troops fighting against the Japanese
4. Nutrition and industrial base for creation of supplies - the Japanese soldier was much lighter and malnourished compared to the US soldier. Also, we had about 400 pounds of supplies per soldier, the Japanese had about 1/2 pounds of supplies per soldier.
5. They had too few natural resources...Japan was an island and their colonies/minning territories on the Phillipinnes and China were lost as the war progressed.

They were an island nation that had to depend on imports for war materials, so when they lost control of the Pacific, it made it more difficult to continue the war. Also, I think they expected the United States to respond differently to the attack on Pearl Harbor. They expected to mostly eliminate the US naval power, that would cause the US to be less likely to want to wage a prolonged war. When they didn't totally wipe out the Navy, and the attack was a 'surprise attack', it made the US mad.

They knew it was the time to stop fighting.
Think. No responsible person in Japan, the emperor, the PM at the moment, Hideki Tojo criminal A. etc, have run away or hidden like the Saddam Hussein, iraq, Sun Wen and Chiang Kaishek, China.

The American manufacturing machine was able to turn out more more and better war materials than the Japanese. The war against the Japanese was a sea war with engagements separated by great distances. Our forces destroyed the Japanese navy and air force, rendering their war machine impotent. Finally, we had the bomb.

They didnt fail in their effort during the war. The only thing they fail is to stop the Nuke from falling on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The whole army would have hara kiri if they surrendered so easily.

The Japanese lost the Battle of Midway in June 1942. When they lost so many aircraft carriers, planes, and pilots, and thus the great part of their naval force, the future was forordained. They could fight on, but they could not win. This must not take away from the bravery of those who fought the island-hopping campaign that approached nearer and nearer the Japanese islands until...

They almost won the war. But the fact that there airplanes did not have enough fuel. They were running out of it. That they had to go back to Japan. Thats how we won!
