Griffey and Mantle have amazing paralells in their careers. Both were on pace to break the all time HR record and injuries cut it short in a big way. Ted Williams lost what 7 of his best years to war? Clemente, Munson and many other of the best had careers cut short by death. Kind of sad to think what would have been. At the time Guidry threw his arm out he was amazing. Another few years of pitching like that and he'd been held up as one of the all time greats.

Griffey was on pace to break the all time RBI record and had a pretty good shot at the all time HR record before injuries short circuited his career. A career that will probably end this year if he wants to go out with class. He might linger on a big longer but his stats are not Griffey level stats. They are the stats of an imposter. Another 3 years are not going to add any milestones. They will devastate his career BA.

Yes, he could have. His skills would have been much sharper and has the potential of hitting 40-50 homers per year. He also would have had much more playing time, so that he could actually chase the record. He could have been that great, but his injuries took away precious time and skills.

He definitely would be close and I think he would probably break the record but he played all out his whole career and he got hurt because of it. Great baseball player. He is one of the few players that show how the game is supposed to be played.

Probably, but thats what makes records so great. You had the potential and you did it. Potential isn't enough. Keep an eye on ARod and Pujols.

I think had he stayed healthy he would own the record right now. Personally I think I'd rather have seen him break it, than Bonds.
