wildcard football team means you barely make the playoffs they were the 2nd team in there division there is 4 teams in the division
1st place in afc west is san diego with 8 wins 2 loses
2nd place chiefs 7 wins 4 Loses
3rd place denver7 wins 4 loses ( the chiefs have the tie breaker cuz they won)
4th place oakland 2 wins 8 loses

The top two division winners in the AFC and NFC get a bye for the first round of the playoffs. The two division winners that did not get a bye have to play one of the wild card teams in their conference. The seeds are matched up 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. The team with the #1 seed plays the lowest seeded team that advances to the next round. The #2 seed plays the other team that advances. Wild card teams are chosen based on which teams had the best records but didn't win their division.

The "wild cards" are the teams that make it to the playoffs without winning their division. Not sure how many there are, however I do know that there is atleast one from each conference. Also, there are other factors involved in the event that two teams in contention finish with the same record.

It means that although they didnt win their division, they make the playoffs because they are the best team that didn't win a division.
