basically anyone who doesn't vote based only on whether or not the canidate: is a NRA member, claims to speak with God personally, or thinks the consitution is just a peace of paper.
a liberal is anyone who finds a functional aspect with certain situations in society, that aren't approven by relious fanatics.
Bush supporters' definition of liberal: anyone who doesn't agree with them on every issue!

Liberalism is the philosophy that people are limited in their ability to make decisions for themselves. Therefore it is the obligation of the enlightened ones to help the others. If anyone has an opinion that is different than the enlightened ones, they are obviously women-hating bigots that don't care for the elderly, nature or animals.
To a liberal, the government is THE way to help the less fortunate thinkers. As long as we continue to give our money to Uncle Sam (at least in the US), Big Brother will dole out what it thinks we need and give when we need it (of course mostly around election time). Furthermore, the enlightened ones will tell us what to do, when we can do it and what to think. The popular press (CNN, BBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, NY Times, Washington Post, ...) are all big supporters of the liberal philosophy so they try to popularize the people that believe as they do and demonize the people that disagree. Most of the people that claim to be liberals base their beliefs on what they hear from the elite media.
If the saying that ignorance is bliss is true, this has got to be a really happy world because liberalism is here to take care of us.

I believe a Liberal is someone who always wants change even if things are working just fine. Liberals don't want to help people they want to give money to the Government and let the Government pick and choose who gets help. So those who know how to cheat the system always get help, and those who need help get screwed. Liberals believe throwing money at a problem is the only way to fix it. I have heard many Liberals say "the more I know people the more I like my dog". Does that sound like love to you?

Free to be whatever and do whatever you want. Eventually leading America to choke on it's own freedom as did the Roman empire.
I'm amazed at the lack of knowledge of the definition of Liberalism with the answers I see here. Either the liberals are simply Bush haters or they are spouting more rhetoric instead of simply answering the question. Mark D exhibits a good definition. Good Question!

Liberalism is caring more about the common and greater good, than about your own wallet or hind end.
I have read some of your past posts here, and must tell you that you are naive not to realize Bush is a big business proxy placeholder president. He is the farthest remove from true conservative idealogue or visionary. He's just a dumb rich man's son.

I don't like to come up with my own definitions of liberal. I'll use others'. Such as this one in "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995):
"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

Putting other people's feelings first, without regard for their real needs. Take this scenario:
Man on street: Help! I've been stabbed!
Liberal: I'm so sorry. I feel so bad for you. Do you want me to hold your hand? How about a hug?
Man on street: Bleeds to death.
Now imagine if the liberal weren't around:
Man on street: Help! I've been stabbed!
Compassionate Conservative: OMG! Let me call 911; in the meantime I'll try to stop the bleeding.
