Macs get fewer viruses. The people who develop viruses want them to affect as many computers as possible, and since there are far fewer Macs, they don't tend to target them. However, it depends on what you want to do with the desktop. Macs are not always the best choice. Research Macs for your purposes and see if they meet your needs.

Good virus protection software (we pay for ours - we don't trust the free ones) has worked very well for us so far.

The hardware has little impact on computer viruses.

The significant elements are operating system (Windows XP, MacOS, Linux).

From a mainstream buyers perspective the choice is really between a Windows XP system and a Macintosh OS system.

The Macintosh is much less likely to be infected by a virus (and is generally more stable) as the Operating System is a Unix variant, and only a fraction of computer viruses are written to infect these systems.

On the other hand - Windows XP systems have thousands if not tens of thousands of viruses and other malign programs written for them annually.

The other defining factor is what Antivirus one chooses, and this is Operating System dependent - and probably better addressed as a second question.

Just my .5

All computers will get infected with viruses if you don't take the trouble to install an anti-virus program, be it a PC or a Mac.

All other are susceptible to get them. Get a good security system and make sure you update it often.

you cant really find a copmuter that wil least likely get a virus, its the programs that you download on it that will stop the viruses. just find a good firewall to put on your computer and do a virus scan once a week
