This is my new drawing that needs a critique! Any constructive criticism helps. =] .. I know the facial structure is a little off, but I can't put my finger on it.

Thanks!

First of all, it is an excellent sketch. You should be proud of your talents.
Now, whassup?
1. The face is "racked", which means it isn't truly based on the symmetrical elipse that faces are. It is racked into a trapezoid, slightly tilted (top) to the right.
2. The nose is also racked but in two directions. It should follow the centerline of the face but it shifts left on its own centerline near the bottom.
3. The sketch is not "balanced" (light to dark & left to right).

Ok, to fix:
1. Get some "flimsy" overlay paper and draw a true elipse, starting / aligning with her chin and jaws, then look at how far off the true elipse sits relative to the face.
2. Pull your tracing flimsy away to a separate table. Find the centerlines of the elipse. In an elipse, there will be one long centerline and two centerpoints (one at her eyebrows and one between her lips).
3. Lay your trace back down on the image, and take note of what is off.
- the nose will need to be corrected to stay on center
- the left jaw will have to be brought back in
- the left hair will have to be extended outward
4. Now for "balance":
- lighten out that huge dark curtain thing in the upper right and
- put heavy dark behind her on the upper left.

John Nagy (in the 60's) used to teach people how to draw and always started with the basic geometric shape in very light pencil. It was easy to stay on course and develop a properly proportioned image. Nagy was famous the world over and even Norman Rockwell did the steps as Nagy described. You cannot skip the steps.

You just skipped that step.

Actually you've done an excellent job of rendering the features, but the bone structure isn't really there, so it looks like the face is too big in proportion to the head as a whole. It helps to think of the head as a three dimensional mass and sketch it in lightly first, then make light marks where the features should go before drawing them in detail. There are lots of good books available that will help you with the correct proportions, it's too detailed to describe here. Keep drawing from life (not just photographs) and your drawings will get better and better.

And by the way no one's face is perfectly symmetrical. I think the mouth looks crooked, but that could be true to the model.

The values on the left side of the face need more additive work. The eye on the left side of the page seems to be oddly closer to the viewer than it should be. Sculpt that side of the head with value and see how you feel.

Also, a great way to pick up on what changes are necessary in an image is the either turn the image upside down or look at it in a mirror. This allows you a "fresh eye"; i.e., you're better able to immediately see what needs fixing than if you look at it the same old way.

Check the central axis of the face.ie: a line drawn vertically through the centre of nose, mouth. You will find that the lips are not at right angles to this axis. Left side of mouth needs to be raised slightly. I think also you have a too much space between the septum of the nose and the top lip and that the spacing between the eyes is a little too large. These are minor adjustments but they will make your image even better!

ok well im critical so please dont take it offensively .. the forehead needs to be bigger it should be a 1/3 of the over all face size. if your split your picture in half at the nose you would see you have two different people in the same person (the face shape is diferent) the nose seems a little crooked near the nostrel , but other than that im in love with this picture she seems almost mischevious and her eyes hold such a story!

The first thing I noticed were the eyebrows. The right one is a little more toward the bridge of her nose than the left and the left one is below the ridge of her eye socket instead of on it. Her right cheek is also a little more rounded than the left. Other than that it's very good. You have talent.

Hope that helps.

The facial structure is off, it looks a little unbalanced especially on the right hand side, but it's neraly there. Are the proportions accurate I think they are slightly off

right side of nose needs to come out a little , 1 mm
mouth needs to move right 1.5 mm
but i would not change it, it leaves an inprestion,
just work it out on the next one,
you know what you are doing,
you just need to get comfortible doing it.
it looks dam good, and i am hard to please.
you have a great style, and great skill.
the things you need to learn are
the things that come with time and experiance

It is a very well drawn picture. I think the reason the face looks slightly off is because the nose is slightly curved to the left.

Critique means to criticize. That's something I do not do. I, will
give you an honest opinion.

It's good. I like it.
