About all I remember is that this small-town pastor finds this big black dog that responds to Bible verses, adopts an abandoned or orphaned kid, and falls in love with the lady next door.

It's the Mitford series. You can find it in most Christian bookstores or online.

Dang, I know that book, it's actually a series, and I work at a bookstore, but I can not remember the name of it!! Didn't the reverernd live in a town called Melville or something with an M? Shoot, I will look for it next time I'm at work and try to get back to you if no one else does! Sorry I can't help!
