who don't help with the childcare issues, don't do housework etc... where you make ALL of the decisions, etc BUT if the kids (ages 5 & 6) start to squabble over something silly like a toy or book, he will all of a sudden start acting like a parent. I don't always butt into the kids' fights as long as they aren't physically getting into it because they need to learn how to talk things out because I am not always going to be around to break up any disagreement for them when they are on their own .... ANYWAY, my husband basically doesn't say anything to the kids but he will try to make his presence known when it's time to discipline; even if I have the situation taken care of, he tries to stand tall and 'take over'... I'm thinking to myself "who do you think YOU are....?" It drives me crazy. I want to tell him to be a real dad, take responsibility, and interact with the kids and not act like 'mr macho man' like that.

he has been out of work since March. he doesn't do anything. I have talked to him about his lack of parenting and he still doesn't quite get it. He says it is because he had a lousy father.. and I told him to learn from his dad's mistakes and make it a point to be a good dad

My husband use to be just like your husband...until the day I told him that he needs to step up and be a real parent to them. Oh, he was really mad and we fought, but he eventually thought about it and changed his ways.

Timing is everything .... it may be that after a hard day at work resolving business issues, he wants peace and quiet and doesn't want to listen to the long squabble of his children ... men at work usually have to make decisions all day long and want a respite from that when they get home. Thats why they leave most decisions up to their wives unless its a large financial issue.

It is unrealistic to expect him to take an active role when you have not expressed this in plain language to him. Ideally, childraising methods and issues should have been discussed before you started to have children ... now that you have them, why haven't you said anything before now? Wanting to tell him and telling him are two different things ... Speak up and discuss the issues before you allow your resentment to erode your marriage. If you just "wish" it to happen, you only have yourself to blame when nothing is resolved and your marriage is in jeopardy. Either speak up or shut up and deal with it.

No !! I guess l was one of the lucky ones when our kids were younger. My husband helped me in all aspects where the kids and housework were concerned. He would help feed, bath and discipline the kids and also helped out around the house. Yes, l guess l was really lucky there !!!
