If a woman was absolutely positive that she did not want children couldnt she have a hysterectomy, and then not have to worry about birth control and/or periods? is there another reason she cant?

I personally, was not thinking of having one. We were discussing hysterectomies in my alternative medicine class and it was just a thought.

A doctor will not usually perform a hysterectomy on a woman as a method of birth control, as that's pretty drastic. There is a procedure called tubal ligation, which ties off the Fallopian tubes and makes pregnancy impossible as the eggs have no way to travel to the uterus. Another possibility is birth control pills or other methods of birth control. However, hysterectomies are usually indicated only if there is a danger to a woman's health, such as large fibroids, endometriosis, or cancer.

There's no reason why she cannot.
Why keep an organ that is not going to be used and go through unnecessary hormonal/period problems?
I would love to have a hysterectomy, but my Gyn won't do it. I'm not able to have children, so why keep the thing? I'm 44.

from the beginning of time, till the end of time, woman were created to bear children.
Our chemical structure for proper sustenance and longevity is correct amounts of estrogen, hormones etc..
Without these, woman suffer from a malady of ills such as:
weakening of the bones ie.. osteoporosis, anemia, tooth decay etc..
If woman progress to and through menopause, her body has transgressed as "planned".
If a woman has a hysterectomy for the sole purpose of birth control, well first of all, insurance companies will not approve them unless the woman's doctors have tried any and all remedies making a hysterectomy the last resort.

Usually you need to be of a certian age or have a certian amount of children already. Other reason are medical necessity. I would advise an IUD, they have come along way and are much safer now, especially the new one, they offer protection for 5 years and can be removed at any time.

No, but finding a doctor to do it may be difficult as they all tend to think we are airheads who dont know our own minds!! As long as the ovaries are left behind medically there is no reason why it should not happen if the woman wishes it to...;

A doctor will not do a hysterecomy just for birth control. A tubal ligation can be performed, but you will still have periods.

I believe there are some surgical procedures that can render a person completely infertile and still let them enjoy sex. Of course, like all surgery, this kind of operation would not be without its health risks.

Most Dr's won't do them unless you're over a certain age. If you or whomever doesn't want kids, I wouldn't suggest something so radical there is no way to get it back.. and you never know about the future.
But yes it is possible.
